Who Should Avoid Peppermint Oil
Peppermint Oil for Irritable Bowel Syndrome
When used as instructed, peppermint oil is generally safe, but certain people may experience potential adverse effects. Low Iron Levels Those with low iron levels or iron-deficiency anemia should avoid peppermint products because they may inhibit iron absorption . Drug Interactions People taking prescription medications or herbs should take caution when using peppermint oil due to potential interactions. Like grapefruit juice, peppermint oil can inhibit many of the pathways responsible for metabolizing commonly used drugs. Check with your doctor for any potential interactions before starting peppermint products. Reduced Stomach Acid If you have low or no stomach acid it may be wise to avoid peppermint oil capsules. This includes people using acid-blocking medications like antacids, H2-blockers and proton-pump inhibitors as they reduce the acidity of the stomach. If youre still interested in using peppermint oil for digestive relief, separate these products by at least two hours. Chronic Diarrhea Those with chronic diarrhea may want to avoid peppermint oil until the diarrhea resolves. Poor Tolerance Do not use peppermint oil if you notice a negative response. When applied topically, some people experience skin irritation and contact dermatitis . There have also been rare reports of digestive burning, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, belching, dry mouth and increased appetite when using peppermint oil. Pregnant or Lactating Women Peppermint Oil For DigestionThe small intestine has three sections, the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. The duodenum connects to the stomach and measures about twenty-five centimeters long. Ducts from the pancreas and gallbladder connect to the small intestine early at the duodenum so the digestive enzymes and bile they release may pass through the full length of the small intestine. Following the duodenum is the jejunum, the middle section of the small intestine, about one meter long. The twists and folds of the small intestine really begin with the jejunum, and as the jejunum subtly transitions into the ileum these folds, twists, and projections increase. The ileum is the final section of the small intestine, which connects to the large intestine, about 1.8 meters long. The ileum is thicker, more vascular, and has more developed mucus folds than the jejunum. How food transits through the small intestine determines how well it is digested. Each section of the small intestine absorbs different nutrients, and if food is pushed through one section faster than optimal due to IBS, then food wont be properly digested. For example if food is pushed through the duodenum faster than ideal, it wont be mixed with fat-digesting bile as well as it could be, and fats will only be at best poorly digested and absorbed even if they spend long lengths of time in the jejunum and ileum.. Side Effects Of Peppermint OilIn most adults, the small doses of peppermint oil contained in dietary supplements and skin preparations appear to be safe. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, however, should avoid such products because little is known about their safety during pregnancy and lactation. Possible side effects of peppermint oil include: Although enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules may reduce the risk of heartburn, their protective coating can break down more quickly and increase the risk of heartburn when taken at the same time as prescription and over-the-counter medications that decrease stomach acid and which are often used for heartburn or acid reflux. It’s best to take such drugs at least two hours after taking enteric-coated peppermint oil products. A stomach condition called achlorhydria, in which the stomach doesn’t produce hydrochloric acid, also may hasten the coating’s breakdown. So people with the condition are advised against using peppermint oil. What Kinds Of Peppermint Oil Do Experts RecommendPeppermint comes in a variety of forms, including oral capsules, topical essential oils, and diluted extracts for food flavoring. Peppermint can also come in the form of teas, but according to McDougall, Peppermint tea is not manufactured with medical use in mind, and it has no proven effect on IBS. For IBS symptoms in particular, oral capsules are the most recommended form of peppermint oil, because research has suggested they are the most effective for medical purposes, McDougall states. If you choose to try a peppermint oil, its key to know what to look for in an oral supplement. When it comes to swallowing peppermint oils, look for ones that are labeled therapeutic grade, since these are safer to swallow, Sonpal recommends. You should also be aware that peppermint oil supplements can result in mild side effects. It can cause acid reflux and heartburn, so it should be taken in moderation or under consultation with a doctor or pharmacist, McDougall warns. The NIH echoes this caution, noting that oral peppermint oil supplements can have side effects of nausea, dry mouth, abdominal pain, and, in rare cases, allergic reactions. Peppermint oil capsules that are enteric-coated are less likely to lead to heartburn, the NIH states. Be sure to consult with your doctor before adding a peppermint oil supplement to your IBS treatment regimen. Green tea, like other teas, does not have the same caffeine content as other drinks. Because most IBS sufferers intestinal environments are less developed, drinking lukewarm to hot drinks is generally healthier. Green tea without caffeine will still have the same benefits as green tea with caffeine. People suffering from IBS are especially vulnerable to waste and toxins drinking water can aid in the elimination of these substances. If you are in a hot climate, limit yourself to eight cups of water per day. Matcha green tea contains three times as much antioxidants as regular green tea. Peppermint Oil For GerdIn addition to improving digestion through normalizing gut motility and reducing bloating, gas, and indigestion, peppermint oil is also useful in treating acid reflux, clinically known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease . Peppermint oil helps with GERD for the same reason it improves gut motility, it works to relax smooth muscle activity. Peppermint oil reduces multiphasic, spontaneous, and missed esophageal contractions while improving the amplitude and duration of these contractions. Notably peppermint oil completely eliminated simultaneous esophageal contractions. What this means is that peppermint oil reduced erratic all-over-the-place esophageal contractions and stabilized them back to regular consistent strong waves of activity. Peppermint oil also helps normalize duodenal contractions, with 90 mg of peppermint oil relaxing the smooth muscle activity of the duodenum and stomach, reducing the frequency and duration of contractions in both parts of the digestive system. Altogether, peppermint oil is a useful treatment option for GERD that is effective and well-tolerated, causing adverse events very infrequently. So what is it about peppermint oil that makes it a potential IBS symptom reliever? Peppermint oil is a muscle relaxant. As such, it produces an antispasmodic effect, targeting specific symptoms of IBS, in particular pain, cramps, and bloating, says Scott McDougall, the director and a registered manager of the Independent Pharmacy in Bristol, United Kingdom. When food is digested, a natural series of muscle contractions in the gut called peristalsis helps push food through your digestive system and urine to your bladder, McDougall explains. In people with IBS, the nerves that facilitate peristalsis are much more sensitive, and the inner wall of the digestive system reacts more strongly to certain foods that dont typically cause issues in people without IBS, he says. Common foods that can trigger IBS symptoms, according to Mayo Clinic, include milk and dairy products, wheat, beans, citrus fruits, and carbonated beverages, among others. In people with IBS, the guts reaction to these foods often causes pain, bloating, and other symptoms, says McDougall. Certain components of peppermint oil may calm the digestive pains common in IBS. The menthol in peppermint has a decompressing effect on the intestinal smooth muscle. This leads to pain relief for bloating and constipation, says Niket Sonpal, MD, an adjunct assistant professor at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine and a clinical instructor at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Before using an oil, you should do your research regarding safe use, e.g. is the oil safe for internal use, external application or diffusion. Some oils should never be taken internally, or contain the risk for skin irritation if applied topically. Other oils may cause photo-sensitivity. Most oils will require dilution for topical or internal use. This means that the oil is mixed with a “carrier oil”, such as olive oil or fractionated coconut oil. However, this is advisable only if you are physically energetic to take the walk. Gas-O-Fast recommends at least a 10 minute slow and easy walk especially after meals to promote digestion and breakdown of food. However, one should refrain from any strenuous physical activity at least for the first week or two. Reasons for sterilization failure include undetected preexisting pregnancy, occlusion of the wrong structure, incomplete or inadequate occlusion, slippage of a mechanical device, development of a tuboperitoneal fistula, and spontaneous reanastomosis or recanalization of the previously separated tubal segments. When sterilization failure occurs, the pregnancy is more likely to be ectopic than it would be in a woman who has not been using contraception and becomes pregnant. During the procedure: Tubal ligation can be performed in an outpatient setting. The physician may give general anesthesia to make you sleep throughout the procedure. The physician makes a cut or two in the abdomen and inflates it with gas. The physician then inserts a long tube or laparoscope through the incision to view the pelvic organs. After identifying the fallopian tubes, the physician with other instruments closes off the fallopian tubes. Finally, the physician closes the cut with sutures. The whole procedure takes about 20-30 minutes. With bowel movements slowed down, a buildup and subsequent constipation may occur and lead to bloating. Some studies have found that types of anesthesia like nitrous oxide may have links to bowel distress and gastrointestinal issues. Another common side effect of anesthesia is an increased chance of becoming constipated, leading to bloating, excess gas, and general discomfort. In these studies, effects were found to last less than 72 hours and varied based on the type of anesthesia used and the patient’s age, meaning that not everyone will experience similar effects. Post Tubal Ligation SyndromePost tubal ligation syndrome is a complication that can occur after a woman has had her tubes tied. It is a condition that includes symptoms such as pelvic pain, back pain, and chronic fatigue. PTLS can also cause problems with bowel movements, urinary incontinence, and sexual dysfunction. The causes of PTLS are not yet fully understood. The most common theory is that the fallopian tubes are important for the production of hormones that help regulate the bodys functions. The surgeon uses the laparoscope to locate the fallopian tube. Each tube is cut and removed. The remaining ends are ligated or cauterized and the skin is closed with tiny, dissolvable sutures. How many incisions are made?Four incisions are made one in the navel and three in the lower abdomen. What If Tubal Ligation Fails To Prevent PregnancyWhile failure rate is quite low, usually around 2-10 per 1000 women, it is possible to become pregnant after the procedure. If you become pregnant even after the procedure, your pregnancy will proceed normally. However, there will always be a higher chance of having an ectopic pregnancy. If it is an ectopic pregnancy, you will also experience signs such as pain on the sides of your lower abdomen, spotting, a very light period, dizziness, and pressure on the bowels. You should seek immediate medical attention if you have these signs or you suspect that you may have become pregnant. Youll be given a general anesthetic to relax your muscles and prevent pain during surgery. Next, a small incision is made near the navel. The laparoscope is inserted through this incision. Your abdomen is inflated to make the organs easier to view. The laparoscope might also be equipped with surgical devices for taking tissue samples or removing scar tissue. Your provider might also make a second incision at the pubic hairline. This incision provides an additional opening for instruments needed for completing minor surgical procedures. After surgery, youll usually stay in a recovery room for about one hour. Then you will be taken to an outpatient surgery unit for continued observation. You will be discharged after you receive instructions for your home recovery. In most cases, you can leave the hospital about four hours after laparoscopy. Its rare that a patient will need to stay in the hospital overnight after this procedure. Youll be asked to return to your healthcare providers office for follow-up appointments within two to eight weeks of your laparoscopy. Please confirm your follow-up appointment schedule with your provider before leaving the hospital. What Happens During A Tubal Ligation ProcedureWhat was once considered major abdominal surgery is happily now a much less invasive surgery that can be done in an outpatient setting. And since the 30-minute procedure will be performed under anesthesia , you wont feel a thing. The surgery is typically performed by a gynecologist, general surgeon or laparoscopic surgeon. In the days before your surgery, your practitioner may ask you to stop taking drugs that make it harder for your blood to clot , and youll be asked to not eat or drink anything for the eight hours leading up to your surgery. On the day of your tubectomy, your doctor will give you a pregnancy test just to be 100 percent sure that youre not expecting. During the procedure itself, a small incision will be made in your abdomen usually near your belly button and the surgeon will pump a bit of gas into your belly and insert a light and a small tool through the incision so they can see your uterus and fallopian tubes. Then, depending what method your doctor prefers, they’ll block off your fallopian tubes by either adding a clip, by adding a ring that holds the tubes into a small kink, by making a cut in the tubes or by burning a scar into the tubes . As for cost? Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies are required to completely cover the cost of tubal ligation surgery. Research into the role of fiber supplements in treating IBS symptoms is conflicting, with some finding no benefit, a few finding that added fiber to the diet causes bloating and gas, and a handful reporting that soluble fiber helps IBS patients with constipation and diarrhea. A recent study found that psyllium, a soluble fiber, provided significant pain relief for IBS patients with constipation and/or diarrhea. Another found that psyllium has limited effect on constipation and abdominal pain. Schiller says some of his IBS patients get relief from diarrhea and constipation with products containing psyllium, whether in the form of powder, tablets, breakfast bars, or cookies. There’s no difference in their safety or effectiveness, he says. Low Dog often prescribes psyllium for constipation, and if it aggravates constipation, which it can do until the body has enough of it and water, she’ll add magnesium citrate to the mix to counteract the initial constipating effect of psyllium. She recommends powdered psyllium seed husks that can be mixed with liquid. “I also like psyllium because of its cardiovascular benefits. Any good fiber you can get, I like,” Low Dog says. Guar gum, also a soluble fiber that thickens food, shows some promise for IBS symptoms. Dietary fiber can be divided further into short-chain and long-chain carbohydrates, and fermentable or non-fermentable types . Fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols are closely associated with the focus of this review, and are to be considered to be the short-chain carbohydrate, soluble, and highly fermentable type of dietary fiber. Short-chain, soluble and highly fermentable dietary fiber results in rapid gas production that can outpace the capacity of the gastrointestinal tract to absorb gas into the bloodstream for final elimination through the lungs. This imbalance can cause abdominal pain/discomfort, abdominal bloating/distension and flatulence . On the other hand, long-chain, intermediate viscous, soluble and moderately fermentable dietary fiber results in a low gas production and the absence of the symptoms related to excessive gas production . The most common, Palmer says, are high-FODMAP vegetables such as cauliflower, mushrooms, and Brussels sprouts. These FODMAP foods contain groups of short-chain carbohydrates that can cause gastric distress for people with IBS. “This is because they contain sugars and fibers that are rapidly fermented in our guts,” Palmer says. Many people with IBS have found that avoiding high-FODMAP foods can help minimize their symptoms, though it should be noted that it’s meant to be a temporary diet, not a life-long eating plan. This is hardly to say that all veggies are off the tablethere are still many low-FODMAP foods that offer up some fiber, including spinach, arugula, squash, and tomatoes. The Differences Between Soluble And Insoluble FiberExperts liken fiber to an on-off switch as far as IBS is concerned. Soluble fiber slows things down in the digestive tract, helping with diarrhea, while insoluble fiber can speed things up, alleviating constipation. Soluble fiber is hydrophilic so people can think of soluble fiber as being a magnet to water, says Melissa Majumdar, RD, a senior bariatric dietitian for the Brigham and Women’s Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery in Boston. RELATED: A Detailed Guide to the Cabbage Soup Diet Other foods rich in insoluble fiber include flaxseed, chia seeds, whole grains, bran, brown rice, cereals, and rolled oats. Fiber supplements can also help you increase your intake, but Majumdar says that people should turn to this only if they cant get enough fiber in their diets. Some of my patients are limited in their diets and cant get enough fiber to meet what their body needs, so I would go to a supplement in those cases, she says. A meta-analysis published in September 2014 in TheAmerican Journal of Gastroenterology evaluated the use of dietary fiber supplementation in 14 randomized, controlled clinical trials involving 906 people living with IBS. The authors concluded that fiber supplementation especially with psyllium, a soluble fiber was effective in improving symptoms of IBS when compared with a placebo. Interaction Between Dietary Fiber And The Neuroendocrine System Of The Gastrointestinal Tract
How Fiber Will Speed Up Americas Internet
The NES of the gastrointestinal tract comprises gastrointestinal endocrine cells and the enteric nervous system . Various different types of endocrine cells are scattered between the epithelial cells of the mucosa . These endocrine cells constitute approximately 1% of all epithelial cells in the gastrointestinal tract and they have specialized sensors in the form of microvilli that project into the lumen and respond to luminal stimuli by releasing hormones . The distribution, functions and modes of action of the most important gastrointestinal endocrine cells have been described in detail elsewhere . Briefly, each cell type secretes one or more signaling substances into the lamina propria, where these substances act directly on nearby structures , indirectly via an endocrine mode of action , and/or through a synaptic mode of action . The enteric nervous system comprises two plexi: the submucosal plexus and myenteric plexus. The NES regulates several functions of the gastrointestinal tract, including sensation, motility, secretion, absorption, local immune defense and food intake . The components of the NES interact and integrate with each other, the autonomic nervous system, and the afferent and efferent nerve fibers of the central nervous system . How Fiber Affects People With IbsWhile most people benefit from increasing the amount of fiber in their diets, eating too much can actually worsen some IBS symptoms. For example, excess fiber can aggravate problems like bloating, gas and abdominal pain. However, fiber can help to relieve other IBS symptoms, like constipation. Therefore, getting the balance right is not always straightforward. Unfortunately, not everyone with IBS experiences the same digestive issues. This can make it difficult to predict whether fiber is going to help an individual or make matters worse. Furthermore, there are two types of fiber and they affect the body in very different ways. Also Check: Can Not Eating Cause Diarrhea How Do Fiber Gummies WorkFiber gummies contain dietary fiber, which helps to add bulk to stool and make it easier to pass through the intestines. This helps reduce symptoms of constipation and diarrhea associated with IBS. In addition, some types of fiber can help slow down digestion which may help relieve abdominal discomfort. Fiber is a nutrient found in plant-based foods such as legumes, fruits, vegetables, and grains. It cannot be broken down by our bodies, so it helps move food through the digestive system more easily. This can help reduce symptoms of IBS such as diarrhea and constipation. Fiber also benefits your gut microbiome, the colonies of bacteria that live in your intestines, by providing them with food sources to promote their growth and health. Should I Be Taking A Fiber SupplementRemember this is not a one size fits all situation. There are several fiber supplements that are appropriate for IBS. Please speak with your dietitian or health care provider to see if a fiber supplementis appropriate for you. #1. Psyllium Husk FiberThis fiber retains water and provides bulky, easy-to-pass soft stools. Psyllium has been shown to be more effective than stool softeners for those with chronic idiopathic constipation and is also touted as one of the go to fiber source for IBS. It has been shown to help normalize stools and reduce IBS symptoms . As a dietitian I recommended pure psyllium husk powder mixed with a little cranberry juice, lactose-free milk, or low FODMAP milk alternative such almond, rice, or lactose-free milk. It thickens up quickly so be ready to drink soon after mixing. Metamucil is a psyllium-based product that comes in several flavors. I am less inclined, however, to recommend this brand due to the large amounts of added sugar. #2. Partially Hydrogenated Guar Gum#3. Acacia FiberAcacia fiber, also known as acacia gum, is a soluble fiber that helps promote regularity. This fiber tends to mix well and does not thicken up like some fiber supplements making it a little easier to drink for some. #4 MethylcelluloseMethylcellulose is found in Citrucel and MiraFiber is a non-fermentable fiber source, which is suitable for those with IBS. Both the powder or capsules are effective, however be sure to read the directions for proper dosing. Bloating is sporadic, usually triggered by diet or lifestyle, and can be remedied without a trip to the doctor — though the kidneys do play an important role. “The kidney is a dynamic organ,” says Zeratsky. “It decides whether to hold on to water. If youâve had too much salt the night before, then your kidneys will hold on to more water to dilute or correct that salty imbalance… Then they flush it all out.” Extra water is typically stored all over your body in the tissue or between blood vessels, and tends to pool in the extremities . It may seem counterintuitive, but your body also tends to store water when youâre dehydrated: If youâre not drinking enough, your salt/water ratio becomes unbalanced and your body will hang on to any extra fluids until the balance is restored. Spotting can also occur when you switch from a brand name to a generic, Dr. Moritz says. If you have other symptoms, such as recurring diarrhea or vomiting that doesnt improve, this can indicate another serious medical condition. Talk to your doctor ASAP.
